The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame is pleased to host our 2^nd annual Rider Pride Family Day from noon to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 16.

Admission is $10 per family (2 adults & 2 children) or $5 per person. Members of the SSHF are free (please bring your membership card with you).

Admission gives you access to the following activities:

Door prize entry ballot
Games and crafts with a football theme, of course!
Autograph session with Rider alumni (1 – 2 p.m.). Confirmed to date are Lou Clare, Terry Bulych (1973-75), Cleveland Vann (1976-80), Dan Rashovich (1987-99), and Wes Cates (2007-11)
Tailgate BBQ (hamburger, drink & dessert) (noon – 2, or while supplies last)
Dairy Queen coupon for the kids – Rochdale & Normanview locations only (while supplies last)

A newly included addition to this year’s Rider Pride Family Day is our friends at Cabela’s Regina! They will be on hand with free gear for our smaller fans, and great coupons for the adults! Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame: Annual Report 2013

2013 was quite the year for the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. During the course of the year, we were part of great growth. Not only for ourselves, but also sport in the province. Growth for the Hall saw new Directors to our board, new staff to our team, and a terrific inductee Class. Growth for provincial sport saw the substantial contribution of Saskatchewan members to the Canadian Olympic team. Rider Nation welcomed another championship team, who this time accomplished the feat during the last Grey Cup to be played at the old Taylor Field.

The history of sport in this province is stronger than it has ever been and continues to grow every day. In an effort to highlight some of the happenings for us over the past 12 months, we have put together the 2013 edition of our Annual Report. Included in the report is a look back at the major happenings in the Hall, as well as the events and people who made this year so special.

Meet the 2014 Sochi Saskatchewan Olympians & Paralympians

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame will be hosting many of the 2014 Sochi Saskatchewan Olympians & Paralympians this afternoon, Tuesday May 6 between 4-6 p.m. for a public autograph session. What better place to do this than against a backdrop of our exhibit, The Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games presented by McDougall Gauley, which will close with the conclusion of this public event.

Admission to the autograph session is free. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Autograph cards will be offered to all attendees while supplies last.

Spring is always an exciting time of year. The snow begins to thaw (although that seems to have stalled), the sun comes out and the sporting world kicks into high gear. The playoffs have started for many sports, marking the conclusion of the season. For others, spring means a new start and a fresh perspective shared by competitors and fans alike.

This feeling even holds true for us that the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. Spring is the start of many exciting things for us, which are outlined in the latest edition of our newsletter For The Record.

Covered in this issue are a multitude of activities including the conclusion of the Sochi Winter Olympics & Paralympics exhibit, marked by a special appearance from some of this province’s best athletes. Also, as you may have noticed, we have a new look to our website coupled with a great new way to experience the Hall of Fame within our physical boundaries.

Lastly, but certainly not least, you will find details of our upcoming induction weekend. Included in the newsletter are details on the events of the weekend along with ticket information, availability and pricing. Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2014

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame has announced the ten (10) inductees who will become the newest members to be enshrined as part of the Class of 2014. The inductees, including four in the athlete category, two in the category of builder and four in the team category will be officially inducted at the 48th Annual Induction Ceremony to be held at the Delta Regina on Friday, June 13, 2014.

Tickets to the 48th Annual Induction Dinner & Ceremony are $100/person and are available directly from the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.

Everyone purchasing a ticket to the Induction Dinner & Ceremony will be provided one (1) complimentary ticket to the Saturday, June 14 Ottawa Redblacks versus Saskatchewan Roughrider Game courtesy of the Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club.

Ice & Fire Festival

The Ice & Fire Festival is a five-day celebration of winter art, culture and recreational experiences. A constellation of activities will take place throughout the city over the course of the five days with the Festival culminating in Victoria Park on Family Day (February 17). · The grand opening of a new exhibit, Skating….Saskatchewan Style, will take place on Saturday, February 15. We will be offering special hours of operation from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Free Admission will be offered all day.

· On Monday, February 17 (Family Day) we will again be offering special hours of operation from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Free Admission will be offered all day. The SSHF will also be sponsoring Harvey MacFarlane and the Sanguine Clydes Sleigh Rides between 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. The sleigh rides begin in the Plaza area of Victoria Park.

Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame Receives Support From Rider Alumni

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame (SSHF) has received some welcomed financial support thanks to the Saskatchewan Roughriders Alumni Association. The Rider Alumni Association has provided the SSHF with $10,000 as part of the proceeds raised from the alumni association’s first annual Autumn Golf Classic held September 23, 2013, at the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club. The Autumn Golf Classic raised a net profit of $20,000.

“The SSHF does a tremendous job of preserving the history of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and many of our alumni are proud members of the SSHF,” said Terry Bulych, Rider Alumni Association President. “We are pleased to be able to give back and support this great provincial institution which does so much to preserve the legacy of not only the Riders, but all of Saskatchewan’s sporting greats.”

“We truly appreciate the support of the Riders Alumni Association,” said Trent Fraser, President of the SSHF. “These moneys enable the SSHF to continue to properly maintain the important sporting past of our province as well allows us to continue to educate the public of Saskatchewan’s rich sport history.”

The Rider Alumni Association and the SSHF thanks all participants and sponsors of the Autumn Golf Classic.

World Premiere at the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame

Saskatchewan and the Grey Cup – Hope and Heartbreak
Saskatchewan and the Grey Cup – The Winning Years
Saskatchewan and the Grey Cup: A Community Embrace

during our Premiere Party on Tuesday, November 19, 2013.

Saskatchewan and the Grey Cup is a series of three 6 minute vignettes that feature the Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club’s involvement in the Grey Cup over the years. Funded in part by the Community Initiatives Fund and Saskatchewan Lotteries, these vignettes capture the excitement and pride associated with the Roughrider team, as well as provide an opportunity to showcase the permanent collection of the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.

This is an event not to be missed! Join us from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Galleries at 2205 Victoria Avenue to be part of the official launch.

Doors Open Regina

Those of us who are involved with the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame know that it is a special place. Not only because of the timeless pieces it holds with regards to the sporting world, but also because of the rich historical value it holds in this province.

Housing some of Saskatchewan’s most memorable and valuable sporting artifacts, the hall provides countless hours of learning, observation and storytelling the likes of which exists in few other buildings on the planet. Sport however, is not the only thing it has to offer.

Thanks to a new event hosted by Regina Downtown BID entitled Doors Open Regina we have been given the chance to show off not only the contents of the Hall, but the Hall itself. There is a rich history within the building, almost as rich as the history of the building itself.

For example, did you know that the Hall is located in the Land Titles building along with several other sport related associations for the province? The Land Titles building was the first building commissioned by the new provincial government in 1906 and was officially completed in 1910. There are many features of the building which coincide with not only building trends of the time but also things like concrete and marble construction which corresponded with fireproofing codes of the 1910s.

There is so much history, not only with the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame, but also with our incredible Land Titles building that it would be impossible to share it all with you in a few words on this site.

This is why the Hall, in cooperation with Doors Open Regina would like to invite you all to come experience it for yourself at a free open house on Saturday June 1. Our exhibits will be on display free of charge during our regular hours, with the event itself running from 10am-2pm. Also on display will be many of the other iconic buildings in Regina’s downtown area.

Laura Bewcyk Dahlstrom Joins The Team

It is my pleasure to announce that Laura Bewcyk Dahlstrom has joined the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame staff as our new Education Coordinator effective this past Wednesday on April, 24.

Laura brings with her a diverse background that will serve the SSHF well in our education portfolio. She has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Regina (UofR), and is currently completing a Masters of Science within the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies, also at the UofR.

Laura’s previous work experience makes her the ideal person to fill this role, and we could not be happier to have her join our team. In addition to her most recent employment as a Sessional Lecturer and Research Assistant within the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies, Laura has served as a Teaching Assistant with Montessori of Regina, a Program Leader with the City of Regina, and an Aquatic Director and Camp Counselor through the Lumsden Beach Camp. As an aside, Laura is also an accomplished UofR Track & Field athlete having competed nationally at the CIS level from 2004-9.

I encourage you to take the opportunity to stop by the SSHF and introduce yourself to Laura.

Kaylyn Kyle Appearance : Video Recap

It has been a busy couple of months for Kaylyn Kyle since returning from the London Olympics where she helped her team and our country capture a bronze medal; our first medal of any color in the history of the sport. It has been a whirlwind not only in terms of the demands on her time, as media outlets, fans and sponsors all want a piece of her but also emotionally as she has admittedly had little time to allow what has happened to really sink in.

She has however had a few fleeting moments where should let her guard down, be herself and truly enjoy life after the games, and many of those moments have come at home back here in Saskatchewan. Between appearances all over the country and abroad with trips back and forth from here to Los Angeles becoming common, Kaylyn has said that spending time with family and friends has been the best way to enjoy the success she has seen.

Recently she stopped by the Hall of Fame to sign autographs and take photos with fans on a grassroots level, many of whom play in the very same programs as Kaylyn did growing up. It was interesting to see how the star athlete interacted with fans in Regina and it was also great to see just how much everyone involved really did enjoy the experience.

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame was able to have a couple of cameras on hand for the event, and in the process captured some hands on footage of what the day was really all about for Kaylyn and her fans alike. Enjoy the video as we take look back on the morning of October 20th, when fans from across southern Saskatchewan came together to honor one of our great young athletes. Also be on the lookout for more great events and content to come from the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
