Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame: Annual Report 2013

2013 was quite the year for the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. During the course of the year, we were part of great growth. Not only for ourselves, but also sport in the province. Growth for the Hall saw new Directors to our board, new staff to our team, and a terrific inductee Class. Growth for provincial sport saw the substantial contribution of Saskatchewan members to the Canadian Olympic team. Rider Nation welcomed another championship team, who this time accomplished the feat during the last Grey Cup to be played at the old Taylor Field.

The history of sport in this province is stronger than it has ever been and continues to grow every day. In an effort to highlight some of the happenings for us over the past 12 months, we have put together the 2013 edition of our Annual Report. Included in the report is a look back at the major happenings in the Hall, as well as the events and people who made this year so special.

Take a look at the full report included below. A special thanks goes out to all of you, our members, without whom none of this would be possible. We thank you for your patronage and support in 2013 and look forward to making 2014 our best year yet!

Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame Receives Support From Rider Alumni

IMG_7908

Roughrider alumni Al Ford, Dale West, George Reed, Terry Bulych (Alumni President) and Rob Pyne presenting cheque to SSHF President, Trent Fraser, and SSHF Past President, Hugh Vassos

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame (SSHF) has received some welcomed financial support thanks to the Saskatchewan Roughriders Alumni Association. The Rider Alumni Association has provided the SSHF with $10,000 as part of the proceeds raised from the alumni association’s first annual Autumn Golf Classic held September 23, 2013, at the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club. The Autumn Golf Classic raised a net profit of $20,000.

“The SSHF does a tremendous job of preserving the history of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and many of our alumni are proud members of the SSHF,” said Terry Bulych, Rider Alumni Association President. “We are pleased to be able to give back and support this great provincial institution which does so much to preserve the legacy of not only the Riders, but all of Saskatchewan’s sporting greats.”

“We truly appreciate the support of the Riders Alumni Association,” said Trent Fraser, President of the SSHF. “These moneys enable the SSHF to continue to properly maintain the important sporting past of our province as well allows us to continue to educate the public of Saskatchewan’s rich sport history.”

The Rider Alumni Association and the SSHF thanks all participants and sponsors of the Autumn Golf Classic.

Saskatchewan and the Grey Cup – Post Production Continues

Words by: Sheila Kelly

As you probably know by now, Saskatchewan and the Grey Cup – Hope and Heartbreak, Saskatchewan and the Grey Cup – The Winning Years, and Saskatchewan and the Grey Cup: A Community Embrace comprise a series of three 6-minute vignettes that feature the Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club’s involvement in “the Big Game” over the years as Grey Cup participants, champions and hosts.  Produced by the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame with funding provided by the Community Initiatives Fund and Fire Cube Video, these vignettes are the perfect length to capture the interest and attention of our visitors, and provide the SSHF with a tremendous opportunity to showcase the Roughrider permanent collection and involve many of our inductees.

Originally produced to be premiered during Grey Cup week, we were more than a little smug about the fact that the vignettes are now only historically correct to November 17, 2013.  In the weeks following Grey Cup Fire Cube Video has been busy putting together additional footage of the festivities, the game itself, and the memories and experiences of some of those individuals who were in the thick of things.

One of these individuals is Richie Hall, Defensive Coordinator / Linebackers Coach, who has been involved in three of the four Grey Cups won by the Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club.  The interview was pretty awesome as Richie had a lot to share.  So much so that we thought we would release the whole interview (in its original raw cut) because, unfortunately, we know that only a few select sound bites will make it into the final reworked versions of Saskatchewan and the Grey Cup.

We anticipate that post-production on the vignettes will be completed within the next couple of weeks and the revised versions will be available to our visiting public by late January.  At the present time the vignettes are only available for viewing within the SSHF galleries due to copyright permissions.  Stop by and check them out.  It’s the perfect way to fill a lunch break.

In the meantime, sit back and relax and enjoy the insights into the Grey Cup wins of the Saskatchewan Roughriders as recalled by Richie Hall.

The SSHF thanks Richie for granting access for our interview and gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Community Initiatives Fund to make this project a reality.

Check Out Our Inductee Videos

It is no secret that we hold each one of our inductees in very high regard. This is likely due, at least in part to the fact that during the induction process, we are made very familiar with the inductees and their accomplishments. It has always been our intention to give you, our viewing audience the same incredible perspective of them that we are privileged enough to have. For the induction class of 2013, we took a huge step in that direction by producing a small video piece for each new member that we are posting to our website.

Included in each of these short but dynamic pieces is an insightful look at the life and accomplishments that each one of our new inductees has lived out along the way to finding a home in our Hall. Each video can be found on the individual inductee pages on our site www.sasksportshalloffame.com as well as via the YouTube links here.

Please feel free to visit our page, or better yet, our galleries and take in all the history and heritage for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you all in and sharing even more incredible information on the history of sport in Saskatchewan with you.

[/column]

Among the treasures on display are artifacts donated in support of the careers of our inductees, our Louisville Slugger bat collection, uniform samples from the 1940’s through to present day, and components of Arleene Noga’s collection of artifacts specific to the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL).  If you have ever seen the movie, A League of Their Own, you have some knowledge of the League and how women kept the sport alive during WWII.  The SSHF is pleased to have five players from the AAGPBL honoured in the Hall of Fame including Mary “Bonnie” Baker, Muriel Coben, Daisy Junor, Mildred (Warwick) McAuley, and Arleene (Johnson) Noga.  Saskatchewan contributed a total of 26 women to this league out of a total Canadian contingent of 64 players. During the League’s existence (1943-1954) it is estimated that 600 women played on its teams.  Thanks to Arleene and her ability to save just about everything, the SSHF has a very comprehensive collection specific to the AAGPBL.

With the approach of autumn comes the beginning of our Grey Cup celebrations.  Next up is the installation of our first football themed exhibit, Countdown to the Grey Cup: A Salute to the 1966, 1989 & 2007 Saskatchewan Roughrider Champions, opening on September 16th.

There is always something new at the SSHF.  Take the opportunity to check us out in person at 2205 Victoria Avenue and celebrate Saskatchewan’s sport history!
