MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT LINDA BURNHAM

I am honored to be President of the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame (SSHF). I acknowledge I have big shoes to fill, and I thank our immediate Past President Scott Waters for his dedication and service. We have a long line of Past Presidents who have contributed to advancements and successes the SSHF has experienced over the past years.

2016 has been a milestone for the SSHF as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. We have made that celebration last the entire year and have showcased three major events as highlights.

Diamond Girls is a play about the Saskatchewan women who played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.   The one-act, one-woman show has toured several provinces over the last few months and it has received rave reviews everywhere it has played.   We are so proud to be associated with Diamond Girls and proud to have some of those players as inductees in the SSHF.

Our next major event has been a traveling exhibit that is presently touring throughout communities in Saskatchewan.  Our 505 inductees represent over 140 Saskatchewan communities and the traveling exhibit has been our way of taking the Hall to the people.  Another major success, the traveling exhibit has provided us with great exposure throughout the province.

The final major event will be our Gala on September 30. We have chosen to forgo the induction of a new class this year in favor of celebrating the 505 current inductees.  The successes of these inductees is cause for celebration and we wish to recognize them once again in this evening planned to be a one of a kind event.  We will showcase several inductees in Hotstove panels representing Hockey, Football and Olympians. We also have some short videos prepared to showcase many of our inductees while it tells a story about the SSHF. We hope you will join us for this exciting evening.

While we celebrate our past, we also have challenges to accomplish ahead of us.  Our Board of Directors is a group of individuals who are dedicated to making things happen, and have proven qualified to do so.  Our plan is to still secure a new location for the SSHF which will allow us to better showcase the inductees and be more appropriate for the many wonderful artifacts we possess. We continue to search for sustainable fundraising to support the Hall.  We have big dreams and those come at big costs!

I do want to recognize the amazing staff we have at the SSHF.  They have all shown dedication to this year of celebration and have most willingly given of their time to ensure the success of every event.   Thank you to Sheila, Vickie, Brock, Autumn  and the summer staff, Amber, Danelle and Jenna, who have given the SSHF such dedication and commitment in this special year.

On behalf of the Board of Directors I thank you for your support.  Please drop by the Hall, or the traveling exhibit and experience what the Hall is all about. Saskatchewan is a great sporting province. We recognize excellence. We celebrate sport.

Best wishes,

Linda Burnham, President

Renowned historian, founding member of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Missouri, and author of nine baseball books, Phil S Dixon is coming to Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame are pleased to host Mr. Dixon for public audiences in both Saskatoon and Regina.

Mr. Dixon will deliver a short presentation highlighting stories from the years of the baseball barnstorming tours.  He has spent two years traveling throughout the United States and now into Canada, delivering speeches in centres along the path of one of the most famous barnstorming teams – the Kansas City Monarchs.

His passion and enthusiasm for this historic team shines through in Phil’s illustrated appearance. Using baseball poetry and transcribing stories from interviews with hundreds of athletes, Phil will take his audience back in time to the small town sports fields of Saskatchewan where locals would spend an afternoon being entertained by the likes of Satchel Paige or Bullet Rogan.

Presentations will be held on Wednesday, June 17, at 3:00 pm at the Saskatoon Public Library, Cliff Wright Branch auditorium and Thursday, June 18, at 3:00 pm at the Regina Public Library, Central Branch theatre.

Admission is free but donations to the Halls of Fame are always welcome. Light refreshments will be available.

Support for this program is made possible through funding from Saskatchewan Lotteries.

THE SENATE Thursday, April 23, 2015

SASKATCHEWAN SPORTING HALL OF FAME

CONGRATULATIONS TO 2015 INDUCTEES

Hon. A. Raynell Andreychuk: Honourable senators, I rise to congratulate the Saskatchewan Sporting Hall of Fame class of 2015. This year’s inductees include the 1985 Moose Jaw Generals AA Senior Men’s Hockey Team, whose record winning streak saw them take the 1985 Hardy Cup, and the Eugene Hritzuk Senior Men’s Curling Team, which in 2009 took the World Senior Men’s Curling Championship.

The inductees also include five individuals. Richard White is the longest-serving president of Canadian Interuniversity Sport. Dick served more than 30 years as the Director of Athletics at the University of Regina and 15 years as the President of the Regina Association of Basketball Officials.

Another inductee is speed skater Jason Parker, whose many titles include a silver medal in team pursuit at the 2006 Olympics in Turin. In a career spanning 20 years, Jason has competed in three Winter Olympics and 75 world cups and world championships.

The third inductee is triathlete Milos Kostic, who, in 25 years of competitive running, has completed 17 half Ironman and Ironman events, 70.3 triathlons and 20 Ironman or Iron- distance triathlons. A three-time Triathlon Canada Grand Master Triathlete of the Year, Milos holds the Ironman World Championship record in the men’s 65 to 69 age group.

The fourth is hockey player Cliff Koroll, who, as captain for the University of Denver, led his team to win the 1968 NCAA Men’s

Hockey Championship. Cliff played for the National Hockey League Chicago Blackhawks from 1969 to 1980. He later spent seven seasons as the Blackhawks’ assistant coach and two as their public relations director.

Sharon Tkachuk is also being recognized as a builder in athletics for her 45-year officiating career. Sharon has refereed at four Canada Summer Games, three Commonwealth Games, and the 1983 World Student Games. In 2001, she was chief referee at the World Outdoor Championships in Edmonton. Sharon has also been a dedicated high school track and field, volleyball, softball, basketball and curling coach. She has been to Canadian junior and senior championships, the Canadian Interuniversity championships and the ParAthletic championships. Sharon has also served on the National Council of Fitness and Amateur Sport, the board of Saskatchewan Athletics, the Bob Adams Foundation and many others. She is also well known to students whom she has taught and nurtured.

The other inductees will no doubt understand if I point out that Sharon is part of the parliamentary family. Her husband, Senator Tkachuk, is justifiably proud of her, and we join him in that.

Hon. Senators: Hear, hear.

Senator Andreychuk: I invite all senators to congratulate this year’s Saskatchewan Sporting Hall of Fame inductees. Their contributions to athletics and to Saskatchewan are a source of pride to their province and to Canada.

Check Out Our Inductee Videos

It is no secret that we hold each one of our inductees in very high regard. This is likely due, at least in part to the fact that during the induction process, we are made very familiar with the inductees and their accomplishments. It has always been our intention to give you, our viewing audience the same incredible perspective of them that we are privileged enough to have. For the induction class of 2013, we took a huge step in that direction by producing a small video piece for each new member that we are posting to our website.

Included in each of these short but dynamic pieces is an insightful look at the life and accomplishments that each one of our new inductees has lived out along the way to finding a home in our Hall. Each video can be found on the individual inductee pages on our site www.sasksportshalloffame.com as well as via the YouTube links here.

Please feel free to visit our page, or better yet, our galleries and take in all the history and heritage for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you all in and sharing even more incredible information on the history of sport in Saskatchewan with you.
