Behind The Artifact – Hayley Wickenheiser

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame’s Behind the Artifact for September highlights Hayley Wickenheiser’s Canadian national women’s hockey team jersey from the 1998 Nagano Olympic Winter Games. Wickenheiser joined SSHF curator Robyn Jensen to discuss the jersey and her memories of wearing it.

The 1998 Nagano Olympics were Wickenheiser’s first of five Olympic appearances and the first time women competed in ice hockey at the Olympic level. Wickenheiser would win four gold medals and a silver medal in hockey at the Olympics and also represented Canada in softball at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She retired after 23 years on the national team as Canada’s all-time leader in every notable statistical category.

The Behind the Artifact feature is part of a monthly series where the Hall of Fame goes behind the stories of Saskatchewan sport history. Last month, Dorenda Bailey was featured in a Behind the Inductee. In July, we went Behind the Inductee with Ross Wilson who is a member of the 2026 Induction Class as a basketball builder. In June, Robyn went Behind the Artifact with 2019 inductee Wendel Clark.

This month, the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame debuted a new feature – Behind the Artifact.
Hall of Fame inductee Wendel Clark joined SSHF curator Robyn Jensen for the debut episode. Clark was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019 after 15 seasons in the National Hockey League. The gritty winger from Kelvington was the first overall pick in the NHL Draft and spent most of his career starring with the Toronto Maple Leafs where he was a fan favourite.
In this edition of Behind the Artifact, Wendel discusses his time in minor hockey represented by his team jackets from his hometown Kelvington Bantam team, the Yorkton Terriers’ Bantam AAA team, and the Notre Dame Hounds Midget team.
