Murray “Bert” Olmstead played in the Memorial Cup final with the Moose Jaw Canucks in 1945, his first season of junior hockey.
During his professional career, Bert played for the Chicago Blackhawks from 1948 to 1950, the Montreal Canadiens from 1950 to 1958, and the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1958 to 1962.
While he was with the Blackhawks, Bert played on the “Boilermakers Line” or “Meatball Line” with Metro Prystai and Bep Guidolin. In Montreal, Bert played on the “Big Line” with Jean Beliveau and Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion. He won 4 Stanley Cups with the Canadiens (1953, and 1956 to 1958). In 1962, he won his fifth Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Twice a National Hockey League Second All-Star Team member, Olmstead set a record for the most points scored in a game, with 8 points on January 9, 1954. Olmstead was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985.
