Between 1954 and 1967, Ray Lougheed won Saskatchewan championships in the lightweight and welterweight categories ten times. Ray won six Canadian titles between 1956 and 1965 (four freestyle and two Greco Roman). Ray was also the Western Canada Lightweight Champion in 1964.
1958 saw Ray enter the Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales. He also won the 1960 British Commonwealth Tournament in London, England. Ray placed eighth in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.
He competed in the 1965 World Championship in Manchester, England, the 1966 British Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, and placed 2nd in the Pan American Games in 1967
