1955 Garnet Campbell Curling Team

Accomplishments: Canadian Men’s Brier Curling Champions, 1955.

The Garnet Campbell Curling team made history in 1955 as the first Saskatchewan team to win the Canadian Brier Men’s Curling Championship. Keeping it within the family, the team consisted of four brothers from Avonlea: Lloyd Campbell (lead), Donald Campbell (second), Glen Campbell (third) and Garnet Campbell (skip).

After being the runner-ups in the Canadian Brier Championships the previous year, Campbell’s team was eager to take the title in 1955. The competition for the Southern playdowns was fierce, but the Campbell rink won the best of three series against Aub Cochrane’s rink of Regina to advance on to the provincial finals.

The Avonlea team met Glenn Richardson of Saskatoon in the provincial final best of three series. It only took two games for the Campbell team to earn the provincial crown, winning both games, 11-6 and 11-9.

For the first time in history Regina hosted the Canadian Brier Men’s Championships, so the Campbell team was able to win in front of a hometown crowd. The Campbell clan went undefeated in the round robin series with a challenging 11-rink field. Campbell and his brothers dominated the rink, outscoring their opponents 126 to 53 to claim the Canadian Men’s Championship.

Installed in the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1971.
