Our current exhibit, The Boys AND Girls of Summer, will only be available for viewing until Friday, September 6th. This exhibit highlights the individuals and teams who are recognized in the Hall of Fame, along with many of the artifacts that they have donated to our permanent collection. Among the treasures on display are artifacts donated in support of the careers of our inductees, our Louisville Slugger bat collection, uniform samples from the 1940’s through to present day, and components of Arleene Noga’s collection of artifacts specific to the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). If you have ever seen the movie, A League of Their Own, you have some knowledge of the League and how women kept the sport alive during WWII. The SSHF is pleased to have five players from the AAGPBL honoured in the Hall of Fame including Mary “Bonnie” Baker, Muriel Coben, Daisy Junor, Mildred (Warwick) McAuley, and Arleene (Johnson) Noga. Saskatchewan contributed a total of 26 women to this league out of a total Canadian contingent of 64 players. During the League’s existence (1943-1954) it is estimated that 600 women played on its teams. Thanks to Arleene and her ability to save just about everything, the SSHF has a very comprehensive collection specific to the AAGPBL.
With the approach of autumn comes the beginning of our Grey Cup celebrations. Next up is the installation of our first football themed exhibit, Countdown to the Grey Cup: A Salute to the 1966, 1989 & 2007 Saskatchewan Roughrider Champions, opening on September 16th.
