After officially first meeting on Labour Day in 1949, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers met frequently in Regina through the decades. Over the past four decades, the meeting of the prairie foes has been a consistent fixture, leading to this season’s 60th Labour Day Classic clash.
The meeting on the first Sunday in September is the most-anticipated game of each season, with overflow crowds flocking to the stadium. Anything can happen on Labour Day Sunday: shocking upsets, huge blowouts, last-second heroics, and season-changing victories. For two of the CFL’s most passionate fan bases, it’s the most significant regular season game every year and what happens on Labour Day lives in the memories of fans forever.
Our new mini exhibit, Classic Rivals: 60 Labour Day Clashes, looks all the way back to the first meeting in 1949 and highlights some memorable moments and shocking upsets from Labour Days past. It is on display now at the Hall of Fame.
The exhibit complements The First of 60: A Classic Labour Day Rivalry, which the Hall of Fame is organizing along with the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan on August 26 at 7 p.m. at the Archives.
