Opportunities for women in sport weren’t always easy to come by in the 20th Century which makes the achievements of the Hall of Fame’s pioneering female inductees even more remarkable. The four inductees highlighted in this Women In Sport micro exhibit achieved great successes and notable firsts but also faced challenges related to the eras in which they competed.
Laura Malesh played for some of the top softball teams in the world but didn’t have the opportunity to be part of a pro league until her 29th season. After qualifying for the Olympics, an entire community rallied behind Gail (Daley) Bakker to ensure she went to compete there. Dorothy Walton and Joanne Goulet’s greatness earned them notable firsts in their sports as well. Together these four great athletes stories deserve to celebrated and shared.
This Women in Sport exhibit will be on display through the summer.
